Another running analogy coming. Couldn’t help myself with this one.
If you’ve ever run a race you’ve probably gotten boxed in. You have the choice to wait it out or you can try to make a move to get around the runners boxing you in and pass them.
Do you just go with the pack or break out and lead the way?
It’s much easier to just sit back. You’re doing what feels comfortable. You don’t have to plan your move to get out of the box you’re in and you chug a long.
It’s like a job. Do you do the bare minimum and stay comfortable or do you take some risks and break away from the job description (in a good way)?
It’s easy to just do what our job description tells us and work the exact hours the job involves. It’s easy to not put in extra time or put in extra effort or take on extra projects. You’ll finish but likely with a pack as you stay in that box.
But if you make a move and break away it’s like going the extra mile (pun intended) at your job. You put in extra time and take on more than your job description and try new things because you want to lead and stand out. You don’t want to just sit back with the pack or boxed in.
Don’t be afraid to make a move and take the lead. It’s easy to stay comfortable and boxed in. It’s hard to go for it. There are times the move we make doesn’t work and we lose or get caught but at least we tried. It’s just like what happens with work. We sometimes try new things that don’t work but we took the risk instead of just staying status quo.
Don’t be afraid to go for it. You’ll never know how fast you can go if you stay boxed in. Challenge yourself in the race and in life.
