Today was my last workout with the softball team until after the holiday break. On Tuesday, two players asked if we could do some fun games for the last conditioning session. I said I’ll see what I can come up with.
We played Red Light, Green Light so we worked on sprinting and stopping. Then we played Duck, Duck, Goose with different start positions. So push up position, sit up postion, squat so that we worked on quick change of position and holding these exercises while players walked and ran around the circle.
Then we played Simon Says with HIIT exercises. Simon says mountain climbers, Simon says planks with shoulder taps, etc. So we got out HIIT exercises in but in a fun way.
The last game I had planned was Freeze Tag. If you were tagged you had to do a number of squats or burpees or pushups to become unfrozen. The girls ran around and ran hard to avoid getting caught so we got some good running in through this kids’ game.
I enjoyed watching the smiles and laughter as they ran around like little kids. Here are college athletes giggling and trying not to get tagged and playing like they’re 7-10 years old. It was great!
The girls enjoyed my “conditioning” version of Duck Duck Goose so much that they asked if we could end with a regular game without the different starting positions. So we did. They got to work on quickly getting up and sprinting while playing one of the most common and fun games from childhood.
I had never done kids’ games with the teams I’ve worked with and wasn’t sure what to expect. It went so well and I loved seeing how much fun the team was having while getting a workout in through these games.
Today’s workout reminded me that we are all kids at heart. While we can’t have fun and games all the time, it’s not bad to unleash our inner child every now and then.
