Things had been going well. I was down to five chemo treatments and looking forward to their end. My white count had dipped twice but came back up the following week. Then I hit a bump in the road.
I ended up in the ER with a fever Saturday night. A fever in cancer patients is dangerous so we knew I had to head to the hospital when my temp would not go down and reached 102.3.
I also knew I would probably have to stay overnight for observation which is pretty much the standard for cancer patients with a fever.
My white count and neutrophils were both low. And that’s how I ended up with a fever and a cough. I initially thought my cough was due to allergies but now I know it wasn’t.
I’m frustrated. I’m worried. But it’s just a little bump or detour on this road to hopefully remission. It’s not unusual for this to happen to cancer patients and hopefully the antibiotics work so I can get back home and back on my chemo schedule.
If I have to skip one week of chemo until my counts improve it’s really not that big a deal. I need to focus on just getting better and not worry about anything else. The main thing is to rest and take it easy so I can get back to my family and kids.
This is just one bump in the road. I had a few with the baby and pregnancy and it was ok in the end. This is just one with me and hopefully all is ok in the end.
I’m trying to stay positive and hope I get out of here after just one day because you realize how comfortable your bed is after spending time in a hospital bed!
