Friday the 13th is supposed to be bad luck right? Well for us it was a lucky day twice. Both our girls were born on Friday the 13th, Alice on March 13th and Reese on April 13th.
With Reese at my final apt before her birth, I had the choice of being induced the very next day or two days from the apt. I went with two days just in case the baby decided to come on their own, I had an extra day and could possibly avoid an induction. That didn’t happen.
Once the doctor called to book the induction she said the date and realized it was Friday the 13th. We confirmed we were ok with that date and here’s what happened.
One of the first things that happens with the induction is getting an IV. As a nurse struggled to get my IV in I heard a thud. Chris had passed out and hit his head on the floor. He then had to head to the ER to check for a concussion.
After this, I sat in the bed thinking why did I pick Friday the 13th? See it’s bad luck. Look what already happened. My husband is in the ER and I won’t have a birth partner.
But that ended up being the only bad luck that day. Chris was ok and back in the room with an ice pack for his head. After several hours, we welcomed our first baby girl Reese Kerry into the world.
Less than two years later and we were looking at another induction. I again wanted to pick the later date, thinking an extra day could maybe help the baby come on their own and that extra date was Friday the 13th. When we scheduled this the doctor looked at us and said you sure you want Friday the 13th. And we just laughed and said yes, our other daughter was born on Friday the 13th.
This second Friday the 13th was far less eventful than the first (no trips to the ER this time!) And while it took awhile we were lucky to welcome Alice Harper into the world.
With Alice’s birth the bad luck started after this date as the pandemic began and the world literally shut down the following week. We were lucky we had a normal birth before the real craziness of Covid started.
So there’s the stories about our two Friday the 13th girls. We are so lucky to have them in our lives. While a little quirky and weird at times, they fit right in our crazy household and are part of the normal chaos of our lives. We love you Reese and Alice!
