One workout I’ve tried and fell in love with is barre. Barre is basically ballet in workout form. Having never been a dancer and never taken dancing lessons, maybe I love it because I finally have the chance to pretend I’m a ballerina. Unfortunately I am nowhere near as graceful as elegant as most ballerinas are.
Until I took barre classes I never realized how much ballet develops your legs. My glutes and calves would burn after workouts. Barre can be a full body workout as your core should be engaged and your arms are used for different positions and movements.
I think I also like all the ballet terms I have learned many of which are French. There’s of course first through fifth position. There’s plies, releves, arabesque, tendu, passé to name a few.
So if you’re looking for a workout to bring out the ballerina in you, give barre or ballet a try. If anything, it will give you an appreciation of how hard ballet is and how good it is for the legs and entire body. I’m so glad my daughter has already started ballet at a young age, something I missed out on. But it’s never too late to get started.
I enjoy workouts from Lazy Dancer (see link below) on YouTube. There are a lot of 10-20 minute workouts to try including a Swan Lake one!
