One thing I like to do when I work out is constantly mix it up. Not only does this prevent boredom but it’s also how you can see better results from your workouts and greater weight loss (except when you’re on steroids from chemo and can’t lose any weight right now like me!)
I have taken a number of different classes at the gym prior to the pandemic. Then that hit and it meant a lot of home workouts. That is when I expanded what I did even more and began trying some things I’ve never done. One of those is kickboxing.
Not only is kickboxing a great full body workout but it’s a great stress reliever too. While the punches and kicks are not at any targets and just to the air it’s fun to pretend they are something (or someone) you are mad at. I like to imagine I’m kicking cancer’s ass. I’ll leave who or what you want to pretend your target is!
Ever wonder why boxers have amazing abs? Try a kickboxing workout and see. With all the twisting motions involved in punches and kicks, you’ll quickly see why their abs look so good. Disclosure this does not mean you will automatically get six pack abs (I have a keg right now), but you will definitely feel a good core workout the entire time.
It’s fun to learn punches and kicks. I feel like I now understand the boxing world and jab, cross, hook, uppercut. I understand how to chamber my leg and do a forward, side or back kick. You can choose workouts that just focus on individual punches or kicks or workouts that feature combinations of these, which do require greater coordination.
It’s good practice at self-defense. Hopefully you are never in a situation where you would need self defense but in the event you do, you could learn some moves. You can learn how to duck and punch, how to lean back and kick, how to protect your “money maker” aka your face.
And there’s a chance to learn to be light and quick on your feet. Ever hear of the whole Muhammad Ali thing “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Boxing requires footwork along with the punches which will help your coordination.
So that’s my breakdown of kickboxing and boxing and why they are a great workout. It’s fun to pretend you a kicking someone or something’s you know what. It’s fun to pretend you are the next Ali or Mike Tyson (minus the whole ear biting thing and now plane incident.) We all need outlets for our anger and stress and this is one of the best workouts to unload those pent up feelings.
