Modifying workouts is important. We often have do this due to injury. I’ve had to do it due to pregnancies. My legs can’t handle jumping anymore so I’ve learned to modify exercises requiring jumps. I’ve learned to adjust workouts with the teams I was training based on how the workout was going or what kind of shape the players were in.
But the hardest modifications I’ve had to make have come following my mastectomy and then additional surgery following an infection and open incision. I love full body workouts. But following these surgeries I’ve really had to limit movement in both my arms and core.
That has led to big modifications in my workouts especially after my incision opened up as I’m being as cautious as possible to avoid that reopening or any additional complications.
This has led me to do only lower body workouts when I don’t walk for my workout. I know full body workouts lead to greater cardio respiratory development and greater caloric expenditure but I know I need to be smart and just do leg heavy workouts for now. This means my legs are definitely sore after these workouts and climbing stairs can be a struggle. Fortunately we live in a split level with small flights of steps which make this heaviness manageable!
I’ve learned the lack of arm and core movement right now don’t matter. The most important thing is that I stay healthy and don’t overdo it. I have to avoid another post surgical complication so I can return to “normal” and work as quickly as possible.
