I have to share something about the Phillies World Series clinching-win that I’m embarrassed to share as a diehard Phillies fan. We sort of missed the game winning home run by Bryce Harper in the bottom of the eight inning. I’ll explain.
I had been watching the game in my bedroom while the kids were watching TV in our main living room. I was starting to get hangry and knew I needed to have dinner before the game ended. Once dinner was ready I told the kids sorry but the Phillies game is going on as our dining room overlooks the living room and we could watch while we ate. And here’s where the trouble started.
Shane finished dinner first and went downstairs. He then took the remote and changed the channel following the JT Realmuto single. I yelled “what are you doing Bryce Harper is up” and flew down the steps to take the remote and change the channel back to the game.
And when I changed the channel there was Harper rounding second on his home run trot as the Phillies took the 4-3 lead.
So was it good luck that Shane changed the channel? I’m not sure but boy was I mad at him for changing the channel at the worst possible time. Fortunately there is replay and I’ve seen the home run shot I can’t count how many times since the win. But there’s something so special about seeing a great sporting moment live. And thanks to my son (who I love very much), we missed it. But I’ll forgive him.
Since all World Series games start at 8 PM, the kids will miss almost all the game. But for all future meaningful sporting events, the remote will be hidden and controlled by Chris or I. I’m
not missing a great Philly sports moment again!
