Yolo. Remember that silly catch phrase that became wildly popular several years ago. You only live once but as my brother in law liked to joke Yodo, which is also true as we only die once.
The idea behind yolo is to live it up. I’ll add this should be done responsibly as younger kids often used yolo to justify doing stupid things because “yolo.”
But the idea of living it up is a good one. I am so grateful to get a “second chance” after my cancer diagnosis. I always did a lot with my kids before my diagnosis but I’m trying to do even more fun things with them since. That’s why I said you know what let’s go to a Phillies game during spring break. Let’s go to the shore. Let’s go do things because life is all about experiences and what you make of it. It’s not about how perfectly clean your house is and how organized you are but it’s about what you get out and do.
Ironically I watched the movie 80 for Brady last night and yolo was sort of the theme of the movie. The simple plot was that the four women in their 80s (well one was still 79) wanted to go to the Super Bowl because they had never been. I won’t spoil it for you but one of the women had a more pressing reason she wanted to go.
Anyway I loved the movie. The actresses were fantastic and made the cheesy plot and simple story line work. I couldn’t help but think how much my mom would have enjoyed this movie. She loved Lilly Tomlin and Sally Field and one of my favorite things to do with my mom at any age was to go to the theater and see a movie. I’m also a huge Sally Field fan and even though I don’t like Tom Brady I still found myself laughing and close to crying during the film.
Anyway the idea of the film is to splurge, go for it, do what you have always wanted to do. Obviously there are financial and work limitations to what we can do but find things you can afford and are able to do and do them! You won’t regret that special experience. And if it’s with your kids they won’t forget it either.
My mom made sure to yolo and do as much as she could with us for as long as she could. Even when she wasn’t sick she would do as much as she could with my brother and I. She experienced as much as she could with us and I am so grateful for all she took us to. These are memories I will never forget.
So I am trying to do the same for my kids. Go to that game, take that trip to the shore, go to that kids event that I really may not feel like going to but know my kids will like. Because yolo. Live it up because yodo. And the experiences are the things you and your kids will always remember.
