Today was a long crazy day. But it felt good. It felt normal. It felt like I was back.
At work we were hosting the men’s Region soccer semifinals (two games) and women’s soccer championship game and a home basketball scrimmage was also going on. Just a little busy for our department today.
To make it even crazier we have no athletic director and no athletic trainer. But we made it work today.
As Sports Information Coordinator I was going to be there to take care of game updates. I was also on standby if we needed help with the games.
Well we needed help and here’s a little of what I did today. I watched the first of half of our men’s game, helped set up gym for basketball scrimmage at halftime including picking up some trash from the bleachers and mopping an area of the floor that needed some attention. Then back out to the second half of Mercer’s men’s soccer game.
When that ended, back inside and onto my laptop to update the score, social media, our college president and interim AD/Dean of Students.
Then back out for the second semifinal game. I worked the game clock (first time ever) and helped keep track of cards and subs during the game.
Then I updated that score and back for the women’s championship game. One of the softball players who was supposed to be a ball runner ended up saying she had to leave for work so I ended up running the sideline to get balls that went out of bounds. Let me tell you that is a workout and I did a lot of running to get balls and had to pay close attention the entire game.
When the game finally ended (a tough 1-2 loss for Mercer women) I picked up some trash behind both bleachers, gathered all game balls and finally packed up.
When I got home I still wasn’t done. I had to update the score of the women’s game, social media (so much harder to do when you lose versus win) and update the president and Dean of student affairs.
And then I was finally done. I hit the shower because it was close to 80 degrees out today and I was running around I was a sweaty gross mess.
I did it. I worked a region tournament which we actually haven’t hosted since before Covid. And I did literally whatever was needed done today.
It was tiring and exhausting and a very long (and hot) day but I felt like normal. I felt like I belonged. I didn’t feel I was trying to work my way back. I was back.
