I love coming up with workouts. I enjoy coming up with things for myself and I like being able to do it for our teams. It’s like teaching. You come up with a lesson trying to meet an objective, usually strength and/or speed and figure out what you can that works in the time you have and with the facility you have and the number of athletes you have. It’s like a puzzle to solve. And I love it.
The biggest challenge is coming up with different things to keep the workouts interesting. There are some things we have to do again and again to get stronger and faster but I try to change it up as much as I can.
I plan a workout based on where training will be that day which with the softball team could be the gym (basketball court), fitness center, tennis courts outside or turf field now that the soccer season is over. I then plan away and hope the workout goes well-that it times out (not too long or short), that it’s not too hard or too easy (honestly it’s rarely too easy), that there’s not much standing around.
It’s my first time on the turf for a workout with a team in about two years. It was so fun to set up races across the field with some “challenges” along the way.
We finished with some bleacher runs and jumps which the team said they enjoyed, which is funny because the basketball team always hates the bleachers. I’ll take it with softball today!
I am so grateful I am able to do this again. I love getting to work closely with our athletes to help them get stronger and faster. I love using my knowledge of their sport and of conditioning to come up with workouts for the teams. I love being back.
